"Very spacious was the wigwam, Made of deer-skins dressed and whitened, With the Gods of the Dacotahs Drawn and painted on its curtains, And so tall the doorway, hardly Hiawatha stooped to enter, Hardly touched his eagle-feathers As he entered at the doorway." "SONG OF HIAWATHA" --- Longfellow Many moons ago (according to local legend), Redbeard set out in his canoe and floated the rivers of the Midwest, in search of something .... he knew not what. As luck would have it, he happened upon a Sioux village and was granted permission to unroll his sleeping bag and stay awhile. There he adopted the Indian way of life and learned to appreciate housekeeping "teepee-style". When he eventually moved on, the chief of the village presented Redbeard with some teepees of his own. Redbeard hauled those teepees all the way back to the Ozarks, where he set up his very own teepee village on the riverbank overlooking the beautiful Niangua River. There the teepees remain to this day, now available for rental by campers at Redbeard's Ranch.
Redbeard's teepees are designed in the style of the Sioux Indians. Each one is 19.5 feet in diameter with 27-foot poles.
The little banners on top keep birds off the teepee. The smoke smoke flaps above the door can be opened or closed to adjust air flow.
Each teepee has a circular redwood floor and a central gas-log fire pit. Cooking inside the teepee is not permitted. There is a fire ring just outside for your barbecuing convenience. A teepee will sleep up to four people on air mattresses in wooden bed frames (one double bed and two single beds). You provide the bedding.
The hearth is made from flagstones gathered from the creeks and springs on Redbeard's Ranch. Each teepee is also furnished with a couple of benches for cozy chats around the campfire.
If you look carefully, you can see the outline of an eagle with wings unfurled at the very top of the teepee. The air flow of a teepee ensures that it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. High winds typically do not damage the teepee, but simply flow around the circular structure.
